The King’s Avatar follows the story of Ye Xiu, a professional esports player living in Hangzhou, China. Widely considered the best player of the video game Glory.
Ye Xiu was captain of the esports team, “Excellent Era”, holding the account of the ‘Battle God’, ‘One Autumn Leaf’ before being forced to resign from the team, giving up one of the strongest accounts in the game and leave the competitive scene due to his unwillingness to take part in any marketing to profit the team.
I’m standing on 1,000,000 lives.
In the anime “I’m Standing on a Million Lives,” the main character, Yotsuya Yuusuke, is a gamer. He is not the typical gamer, however. He is not interested in playing games for fun or excitement. He is only interested in playing games to win.
Yuusuke’s gaming skills are put to the test when he and his classmates are transported to a strange and unknown world inhabited by mythological creatures. They are tasked by the Game Master with completing a series of quests in order to survive and return to the real world.
Yuusuke is initially reluctant to participate in the quests, but he soon realizes that he is the only one who can save his classmates and the real world. He uses his gaming skills to develop strategies and tactics, and he leads his team to victory through each quest.
This lack of development made it difficult for me to connect with the characters on a deeper level, and it also made the story feel predictable and formulaic. When characters are defined solely by their identities, it becomes easy to anticipate their actions and reactions, which takes away from the excitement and tension that should be present in a compelling narrative.
Furthermore, I felt that the anime itself reinforced this shallow characterization through its writing and direction. The show’s creators seem to have embraced the idea that certain identities or roles dictate a person’s behavior, and they rarely challenge or subvert these expectations. In doing so, they miss out on opportunities to explore complex themes and relationships that could have elevated the series above its peers.
Overall, I think that I’m Standing on a Million Lives is a good anime, but it is not without its flaws. I would recommend it to fans of the isekai genre and dark fantasy alike, but I would also caution them that the anime does have some clichés and underdeveloped side characters.
