Best NVIDIA Control Panel Settings for Gaming

If you like to play computer games, you must be familiar with the graphics card available from NVIDIA.

So you may as well familiarize yourself with all those Nvidia control panel settings for gaming if you’re a gamer because there’s a good chance you’ll be using them sooner or later.

With a few simple tweaks, you can make games look dramatically better, run smoother, and more.

In this article, we well are talking about some of the best Nvidia control panel settings for gaming on Windows, to improve the gaming performance in various ways.

Adjust Image Settings with Preview

if you have got old hardware that struggles to play the games you would like to play, you will need to select “Use my preference emphasizing” and move the slider all the

way to “Performance.” This trades graphics quality for an increased frame rate.

Let the 3D Application Decide:

Selecting this basically disables the impact of any Nvidia control panel settings on games.

Only settings you truly choose during a game are in effect.

This is not suggested, because it reduces your ability to boost and additional control game graphics quality and performance via the NVCP.

Use the Advanced 3D Image Settings:

This is the recommended setting, as it allows the NVCP settings to override/enhance games, and gives you a great many options to do so via the Manage 3D Settings section of the NVCP, as covered further below.

Use my preference emphasizing:

This setting is not recommended. Selecting this option allows you to use a slider to adjust the NVCP settings that are automatically applied to all games, as shown in the following table:

This panel is overflowing with options, and you can scroll through the box to see them all.

Almost every setting on the list can have a big effect on speed, quality, or both, but the following are the most important.

Ambient Occlusion – Depending on your games shadow performance, this changes the way shadowing appears when an object is blocking the ambient light.  In most cases, this can be turned OFF. Turning it ON though should not hurt graphical performance much.  Try it out for yourself.

Anisotropic Filtering or AF – I recommend maxing out this setting to 16x – it’s not too hard on the graphics card, and gives the highest quality.  This setting affects the quality of textures at weird angles.  It’ll help things look more realistic and cleaner.  

Antialiasing FXAA – In the above screenshot I have this set to OFF, however, in some games, this can dramatically improve the quality of jagged lines. Games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Batman: Arkham City and Battlefield 3 take advantage of this setting very well.

Antialiasing Mode – Always set this to Override the application setting, let NVidia do the work for you.

Antialiasing Setting – Just do 4x, always.  It’s a happy medium between performance and quality. If you run SLI, you can get away with 8x SLI mode AA. Play around with it!

Antialiasing Transparency – I prefer Multisample.  Some people will argue you should go higher, and that is fine. But multisample would be the best happy medium.

NVIDIA PhysX

PhysX is also under the Nvidia Control Panel 3D Settings. On this menu, you could set the PhysX processor to the CPU or GPU. It is best to select the GPU since PhysX is made to utilize the CUDA cores.

But, if you are playing a game on a low processor with a good GPU, you should disable the NVIDIA PhysX from the control panel, to decrease the load from the processor.
