Story

KEKKAISHI Anime Review

Kekkaishi is an anime that follows Yoshimura Sumimura, who comes from a long history of “Kekkaishi,” or people with magical abilities. These people are capable of annihilating evil entities known as Ayakashi. The Ayakashi visit the human realm on occasionally to feast on the power coming from the region of Karasumori. This also happens to be the location of Yoshimura’s high school.

Yoshimura must now fight to defend his beloved school and hometown from these ghosts. However, he would rather be baking cakes than battling off these obnoxious characters who appear at night. Fortunately, he isn’t fighting alone, as his childhood buddy and neighbor, Tokine Yukimura joins him. Despite coming from opposing clans, these two make an excellent team, which is critical in combating the evil that is closing in.

The story is captivating and interesting, with a focus on ghosts and demons, which is always entertaining. However, the execution falls short of the mark. The pacing is frequently slow and draggy, and important details are cut over or ignored outright. Yoshimori’s unrequited love for Tokine, for example, and what makes his talents so distinctive are never completely addressed.

The Ayakashi strike in waves, claiming the area as their own. A dark group observes, waiting for the best moment to strike. Kekkaishi is an intriguing anime full of action and suspense that will keep viewers interested throughout.

Characters

KEKKAISHI Anime Review

For the most part, the characters are three-dimensional and appealing. Despite being one-dimensional, Kaguro makes a good villain; he’s charming in a devious manner, and it’s pleasant to watch him have his comeuppance in the end. The other characters, on the other hand, lack personality and depth. This is especially obvious when it comes to emotional reactions to death; normally, individuals have a strong emotional reaction to death, but in Kekkaishi, they appear fairly blasé about it, which is laughable.

Overall

Kekkaishi is an anime with a lot of potential but unfortunately falls short in many areas.

Overall, Kekkaishi is an anime with good intentions but poor execution. It’s worth watching if you’re interested in the premise, but don’t expect too much from it.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
