Should Video Games Be Considered a Sport?

In recent years, many different types of skills have made it into the competitive arena. Chess is an example of a competitive sport that does not involve extreme physical activity.

Should video games be considered a sport? This is an excellent topic for an argumentative essay.

In fact, students frequently choose video games as a topic for their papers.

Quick, what are the first few things that come to mind when you hear the word “sport?”

  • Competition wins, and losses
  • Athletic ability
  • Physical activity
  • Fans and entertainment; stadiums, fields, and arenas
  • Practice and dedication
  • College scholarships

Esports is a level of competition in which the best gamers worldwide compete in tournaments against other players for large prizes or pools of money.

Popular online game League of Legends, for example, had a $1 million prize for the winners of National League of Legends tournament.

Reasons why Video Gaming should be Considered a Sport

Dedication

Competitive video gaming is not the same thing as a kid sitting in his living room all day on the weekends.

Practice for many sports takes a determined mindset. This is true of any profession or sport.

  • Video games take coordination, training and are very taxing on the mind.
  • Video games require attention, focus and very fast reflexes in most cases.
  • Even though it is not a physical activity, an electronic game requires a lot of energy to play.

College scholarships

Colleges and universities across the globe, though especially those in the USA and South Korea, are increasingly offering opportunities for gamers to ease the transition from the amateur to the professional scene.

One of the first colleges to offer a full gaming scholarship was Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Harrisburg University recently announced the creation of an esports team with 16 varsity players.

Just like members of college sports teams across the country, the varsity esports players can receive money for their schooling and housing.

The 16 are known as competitive gamers.

Practice and dedication

Training involves fitting in hours of practice, as well as other life commitments.

Some gamers have to hold down jobs to fund their competition.

Athletes get up and move forward, even on days when they do not feel like it. This is how you can tell that dedication exists.

And training doesn’t mean simply playing more games; there is plenty of that, sure, but there is a lot more that goes into it.

Besides teamwork and practice, dedication is another important skill required to be a professional player.

Even if you are not good at a game, but practicing it over and over again to achieve the required expertise without giving up hope.

Every competitive expert gamer has reached a level because they’ve spent years working hard and striving continuously to improve their gaming skills.
